Recovery myths, gently debunked

Ice on everything, rest for weeks, stretch harder — a short field guide to the advice worth ignoring.

Recovery advice ages badly. What was standard practice a decade ago often reads today like a well-meaning suggestion to make things worse.

Myth one: ice everything. Short bursts of cold can be useful for comfort, but inflammation is part of the repair. Blanket icing tends to blunt the process rather than help it.

Myth two: rest until it doesn't hurt. Complete rest weakens tissue faster than most people expect. The right kind of load, early, is closer to a treatment than a risk.

Myth three: stretch it out. Tightness is often protective. Loading the area — carefully, progressively — usually resolves the sensation better than pulling on it.

The right plan is smaller than you think, and more consistent than you'd like.

This piece is for general information. It isn't a substitute for a proper assessment — if something's bothering you, come in and let's have a look.
